RUNTIME GUIDE

How long will a portable power station run a refrigerator?

Updated October 2026 · Educational guide, not electrical advice

The refrigerator is usually the first appliance people want to keep running during an outage. It is also one of the trickiest to estimate, because its compressor cycles on and off and needs a burst of power each time it starts.

Use the EnergyGuide label, not just the running watts

A refrigerator might draw 100–200 W while the compressor runs, but it does not run all the time. The yellow EnergyGuide label on US refrigerators lists estimated yearly energy use in kWh. Divide by 365 to get a daily figure:

Daily energy (Wh) = yearly kWh ÷ 365 × 1,000 Average power (W) = daily Wh ÷ 24

For example, a label of 500 kWh/year works out to about 1,370 Wh per day, or an average of roughly 57 W. Real use is often higher in a hot kitchen or when the door is opened frequently, and lower when the fridge is full and kept closed.

Estimate the runtime

Runtime (h) ≈ usable battery Wh ÷ (average fridge W ÷ inverter efficiency + station idle W)

Assume a 2,000 Wh station with a 10% reserve (1,800 Wh usable), 90% inverter efficiency and 15 W of self-consumption:

1,800 ÷ (57 ÷ 0.90 + 15) ≈ 1,800 ÷ 78 ≈ 23 hours
Usable batteryFridge average 40 WFridge average 57 WFridge average 80 W
900 Wh (≈1,000 Wh station)≈ 15 h≈ 12 h≈ 9 h
1,800 Wh (≈2,000 Wh station)≈ 30 h≈ 23 h≈ 17 h
3,600 Wh (≈4,000 Wh station)≈ 60 h≈ 46 h≈ 35 h

Same assumptions in every cell: 90% inverter efficiency and 15 W idle draw. These are planning estimates; actual runtime depends on the specific refrigerator, room temperature and how the station manages its inverter.

Check the startup surge

Each time the compressor starts it can briefly draw several times its running power. Before relying on a station, confirm two things in its manual or specifications: the surge (peak) rating and how long it can hold that surge. If your refrigerator's manual lists a starting current or locked-rotor amps, compare it against those numbers. Newer inverter-compressor refrigerators usually start more gently.

Practical tips during an outage

Want to add more appliances?

Combining a refrigerator with a router, lights or medical devices changes both the energy and the surge picture. The sizing guide explains how to add them up, and the calculator does it hour by hour.
